Hand Knit Items

Following the incredible success of “Gnome Running Through the Forest” at Stitches West, I’m planning to create new additions to the “Gnome” family. Please welcome “Gnome Running Through the Autumn leaves” !!

At the moment, there are only two skeins in existence. One I will use for a demo sock and the other will be posted for sale on Etsy. Although I will probably make more in the future, my immediate plans after Stitches are to test new colorways before going into regular production. If you would like to grab this unique skein, visit my Etsy site.

Update 03/17/09: The skein on Etsy sold in less than 5 min! I have posted another one on ebay here:

I’ve been knitting things for my family members for as long as I can remember, mostly for my mom and siblings, but now for my dad too. I knit him a pair of dress socks a couple of months ago and he went nuts over them. After hearing so many of my knitting stories he’s now really down on the lingo, so when I offered to knit him another pair to his specifications, the conversation went something like this:

Me: Hey dad, after Stitches, I’ll have time to knit again, so how about another pair of socks?

Dad: great!

Me: anything specific you would be interested in?

Dad: Yes. I’d really like a pair of house socks, something I can wear instead of slippers when its cold. I’d prefer superwash wool so I can throw the socks in the washing machine and not have to worry about hand washing them.

Me: Ok. I can do that, no problem. What about color?

Dad: These are socks I’d probably wear with dark colored pants, so something in the blue range with a bit of black would be nice, with some flecks of white in the skein as well, but not too much white. I’d like the overall effect to be “tweedy” rather than “stripey”.

Me: whoa dad! You’re really down on the lingo.

So here is the timeline for Dad’s custom socks:

Tuesday, March 3rd: Located a 400g hank of undyed 100% superwash merino. Dyed it up on tuesday after getting home from work. Set it out to dry in my home studio.

Wednesday, March 4th: Skeined it up and took pictures, then wound it into a center-pull ball.

Friday, March 6th: left for a family vacation, knit a swatch

Saturday, March 7th: knit sock #1

Sunday, March 8th: knit sock #2 and grafted both toes with the Kitchener stich and wove in the ends. Dad tried on the socks and loved them!

I will post pictures as soon as I get back in town.
